WWE Vengeance 2007 Results
Vengeance ended up being a pay per view that relied solely on the "Night of Champions" gimmick. The action itself failed to live up to expectations.
Night starts off with a decent World Tag Team Championship match and a new finisher for Lance Cade. The announcers sold the fact that Matt Hardy's knee was injured by Finlay on Smackdown, but it didn't really play all that much into the outcome. Perhaps it's time for the Hardys to go solo.
The WWE Cruiserweight Championship match was a bit slow paced, especially considering what we all know Chavo Guerrero and Jimmy Wang Yang are capable of. The crowd was really indifferent about this match.
The first big disappointment of the night was the announcement of Johnny Nitro replacing Chris Benoit in the ECW World Heavyweight Championship match. The crowd really hated this match as chants of "Boring!" filled the arena. They also chanted "We want Benoit!" pretty loudly. The surprise finish made things worse.
The WWE Intercontinental Championship match was basically a tool to get Umaga over as a monster. He dominated Santino Marella throughout the match, but ended up being disqualified by the referee for failing to stop his attack.
MVP retained his title in the United States Heavyweight Championship match against Ric Flair. The match was a bit short and failed to live up to expectations. The writers wanted to pair MVP up with a good worker like Flair to further enhance his abilities, but apparently that didn't work out too well.
The WWE Tag Team Championship match was a blowoff match. The mystery tag team ended up being Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy Snuka. It was obvious that they weren't going to win the titles from Deuce and Domino. As expected, it was a bad match. The ending was nice, though, as Tony Garea and Rick Martel jumped the rails to help out Slaughter and Snuka.
Batista blew his last chance at winning Edge's World Heavyweight Championship. Both men were fighting outside the ring. Batista nails the powerbomb onto the floor. The referee counts to ten as Batista is trying to get into the ring after shoving Edge back into the ring. The match was solid, but the ending was a bit confusing since the referee was supposed to restart the count after Edge got into the ring.
Since the writers needed more than one championship to change hands on a pay per view that consists of eight championship matches, they decided to have Candice Michelle win the WWE Women's Championship from Melina. The finisher looked a bit botched, but most people were either in the restroom or getting a snack, so they didn't notice.
The WWE Heavyweight Championship match was on its way towards living up to the hype, but the match ended about 15 minutes too short. All five wrestlers hit their key spots and got a nice crowd reaction from it. The crowd marked out when they teased a confrontation between John Cena and Bobby Lashley. Lashley ended up being the hardcore one in the match as he did a flying plancha over the top rope to the floor. He also took an FU to the announce table.
All in all, the pay per view felt forced. The matches were cut short because there were just too many matches booked in the time frame allotted. It was nice seeing some older wrestlers there, especially Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. However, that wasn't enough to save the pay per view. |
