Those rumors about WWE giving Apollo Crews a major push turned out to be true after all. The developmental wrestler has now been named the number one contender to the NXT Championship currently held by Finn Balor. Crews leapfrogged over several other performers, including Tyler Breeze and Samoa Joe, to get that highly coveted spot. The belief is that there is a very good chance of him winning the championship soon.

Developmental wrestlers in WWE generally do not get paid a lot of money, and that was one of the things that caused Samoa Joe to be hesitant about signing a contract with the company. In order to get the deal done, management opted to give him a contract that might help them secure more of the top performers on the independent scene. Joe is being allowed to work for other promotions, provided that he does not appear on television.

After the big NXT event last night, Triple H held a meeting with the performers. He praised them for their performance on the show, as it went well above expectations. HHH also thanks the wrestlers for not leaking the Samoa Joe debut to the internet wrestling community. Generally, someone backstage is responsible for getting the word out to one of the various websites. This time, however, the company went above and beyond to keep it a secret.

Earlier in the week, Samoa Joe was spotted hanging out with other wrestlers at Walemania. It's not all fun and games, however. The former world heavyweight champion worked a match for ROH, where he challenged Jay Briscoe for their version of the heavyweight championship. Briscoe successfully retained, but that does not come as a surprise to those who believe that Joe will be signing up with the WWE developmental program soon.

Walemania was the place to be this week if you were hoping to see a lot of wrestlers in the same place. Rey Mysterio made his first public appearance since the tragic Perro Aguayo incident. His buddy Konnan was there with him. The two of them were heavily advertised to be there. Three guys who were not scheduled to be there were Scott Hall, MVP and Samoa Joe, who all decided to simply pop up at the event and party with one another.

There was a point in time where Puerto Rico was one of the biggest professional wrestling hot beds on the entire planet. That has changed tremendously. Wrestlers are not as enthusiastic about working on the island like they used to be. Mexico and Japan still remain two of the hottest scenes outside of the United States. Europe has seemingly overtaken the island as well. Free agents like Samoa Joe and Justin Gabriel are unlikely to work there.
