Smackdown Results - April 4, 2008

Vickie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Edge, Theodore Long, Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder

Pretty good opening segment with Edge and his crew.

He basically apologizes to Vickie Guerrero for failing her at Wrestlemania 24. Chavo Guerrero does the same thing. She ends up giving them both title shots at Backlash.

We already know that Edge is playing Vickie Guerrero. Having Chavo Guerrero playing her as well was a brilliant addition to this storyline.

How was Vickie Guerrero able to give Chavo Guerrero a rematch for the ECW Heavyweight Champion? Isn't that Armando Estrada's job? Guess the writers overlooked that.

MVP vs Matt Hardy

The match itself was pretty good, but WWE dropped the ball a little bit here by not capitalizing on the momentum that this feud has. Making a non-title match also took away the unpredictability of things because it was pretty obvious that Matt Hardy was going to pick up the victory.

WWE might have been better off utilizing a segment here instead of a match.

Winner: Matt Hardy

Festus vs Zack Ryder

Pointless match here.

First of all, there's not a feud going on between Zack Ryder and Festus. Secondly, this should have been a tag team match. It would have been even better if the WWE Tag Team Champions were involved, too.

The match itself wasn't anything special. Festus dominates Zack Ryder.

Winner: Festus

Shawn Michaels, Batista

Shawn Michaels made a rare visit to Smackdown to try to explain to the fans why he had to finish off Ric Flair at Wrestlemania. Batista comes out and confronts him about it.

This could potentially be the feud of the year if it's done right.

Batista has always been able to put on great matches when he's in the ring with skilled veterans like Triple H and the Undertaker. Shawn Michaels should be able to carry him as well.

Plus, the storyline behind this thing is quite intriguing. They have so many different ways they can go.

Vladimir Kozlov vs Matt Bentley

WWE has decided to bring Vladimir Kozlov up from developmental again. In case you weren't aware, WWE tried bringing him up from developmental a while back on Monday Night Raw, but he wasn't ready. Vince McMahon was very furious at staff for doing that.

People say that he's improved a bit. He must have been really bad because he didn't show anything special on Smackdown.

WWE should seriously consider bringing someone in to manage this guy. He doesn't look like he's going to be a star on his own.

By the way, his opponent, Matt Bentley, is related to Shawn Michaels. He was released by TNA not too long ago.

Winner: Vladimir Kozlov

John Morrison & the Miz vs Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore

This tag team match could have been a bit better if the WWE Tag Team Championships were on the line. It wouldn't hurt at all for the tag team division to have at least one feud, especially one over the title.

Another thing that really killed this segment (and the tag team division) was the fact that it was basically just a set up for the Great Khali to come out afterwards and demolish them all. That was unnecessary. There are other ways to build up the Great Khali for his feud with the Big Show.

Winners: John Morrison & the Miz

Diva Competition

Michelle McCool wins the diva competition by defeating Cherry, which was basically just a way to promote Beverly Hills Choppers. Nice to see Cherry getting a small dose of momentum by being a finalist.

After being presented her motorcycle, Michelle McCool was attacked by Victoria and a mysterious blonde woman. Of course, the woman was Nattie Neidhart, but WWE is playing it off as if they aren't too sure who she is.

Winner: Michelle McCool

Kane vs the Undertaker

Very smart move here booking a big match as the main event on Smackdown. It wouldn't hurt to get more semi marquee matches on Smackdown.

Another good move was that Kane didn't have to do the clean loss to the Undertaker. They were both knocked out, which keeps both guy strong.

Afterwards, Edge, Chavo Guerrero, Curt Hawkins, and Zack Ryder tried to attack the Brothers of Destruction. However, Kane and Undertaker got the upper hand and eliminated their foes.

Hopefully, this turns into a feud that lasts for a couple of months.

Winner: Draw

Since this was the first episode after Wrestlemania, Smackdown should have been much better. They should have put in much more effort to kick start the new season of wrestling.

Instead, it felt like the writers all took a break.

The beginning portion and the ending portion was entertaining. Unfortunately, though, the rest of the show was absolutely horrible. If not for the Shawn Michaels segment in the middle of the show, it would have been pointless to watch anything but the first few minutes and the final few minutes.
