WWE One Night Stand 2008 Results

The One Night Stand pay per view is the one night a year when WWE wrestlers go extreme. The marketing actually delivered because the show was easily one of the best WWE shows over the last few years. Every match was entertaining.

Falls Count Anywhere Match
Umaga vs Jeff Hardy

As expected, this was an excellent match choice for these two. They did get a bit creative as Jeff Hardy slides down the stairs to hit Umaga with a flying crossbody block.

As I predicted, Jeff Hardy was going to be taking a huge bump to end the show. He basically did a swanton bomb off the top of a truck on to Umaga, who was laying on the concrete.

They pulled out of "clever camera angle" routine, but there's still going ot be plenty of fans who think that he really did land on the concrete.

Winner: Jeff Hardy

Singapore Cane Match
John Morrison vs Big Show vs Chavo Guerrero vs Tommy Dreamer vs CM Punk

Pretty entertaining match. Plenty of use of the Singapore cane, so that left fans pretty happy. Big Show receives a nasty cut to his head, which causes his character to go insane and demolish everyone.

Big Show gets the pin after a chokeslam and a huge Singapore cane shot on Tommy Dreamer.

The one thing that did bother me, though, was the fact that there were canes hanging on a pole. What's the point of climbing for that when there were a ton of canes available outside the ring? Makes no sense.

Winner: Big Show

First Blood Match
JBL vs John Cena

Pretty good match. There was more of a focus in this match because both wrestlers knew what their goal was. They knew they had to try to make the other wrestler bleed.

The ending was creative. John Cena used a steel chain to assist him with his STFU. JBL bled from the mouth, and the match was over. However, the problem with the ending was that it was entirely too rushed. JBL was in the move for less than 3 seconds before he started bleeding. They should have stretched it out a little bit longer for the dramatic effect.

Then again, they might have had to rush it since there was a chance that the blood packet may have burst a bit too soon.

Winner: John Cena

I Quit Match
Melina Perez vs Beth Phoenix

Quite easily the best divas match in recent history. WWE seriously needs to remember to put two good in-ring performers together when it comes to booking diva matches on pay per view.

There was a surprising good amount of ring psychology involved in this match. With Beth Phoenix being the bigger wrestler, Melina wisely attacked the arm to gain a submission.

Beth Phoenix picks up the win after an awesome wheel barrel slam, followed by her submissive move.

Winner: Beth Phoenix

Stretcher Match
Shawn Michaels vs Batista

Very good match between these two. Much better than their match from earlier this year. All the big moves were done in this match.

Chris Jericho even made an appearance to morally support Shawn Michaels (or did he have something else in mind?).

Another nice spot was when Batista told Shawn Michaels, "I don't love you. I'm not sorry." That was a play on what Shawn Michaels said to Ric Flair during the retirement match at Wrestlemania 24.

Batista gets the win after a vicious spinebuster on the steel steps.

Winner: Batista

WWE Heavyweight Championship Match
Last Man Standing Match
Triple H vs Randy Orton

The match was doing pretty good until Randy Orton suffered an injury. Basically, he landed wrong after being thrown over the top rope by Triple H, who was countering the RKO.

When Randy Orton hit the floor, he immediately knew that he was injured, and he informed the referee. Triple H had to come up with something quick to end the match. He decided to hit Randy Orton in the face with a sledgehammer.

After the match ended, Randy Orton was visably upset as he yelled some profanity towards the audience. That part wasn't scripted. He was just losing it.

Winner: Triple H

World Heavyweight Championship Match
TLC Match
Edge vs Undertaker

Excellent match. Plenty of drama. Plenty of weapon use.

The suspense in the match was stretched out really well thanks to the two waves of interference.

First, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder make an appearance to stop the Undertaker after Edge takes a wicked bump onto the ladder outside of the ring. Undertaker disposes of them by sending each of them from the ring through a table on the floor.

When it looked like the Undertaker was going to grab the belt again, Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely make their appearance. Some steel chair shots from the Undertaker got rid of those two.

The Undertaker once again climbed the ladder, but this time, Edge recovered to send him crashing from the top of the ladder in the ring down to the stacks of tables on the arena floor. Tremendous bump from the Undertaker there.

The ending was a bit predictable since the Undertaker purposely positioned the ladder away from the belt before he climbed up. Nonetheless, though, the fact that a veteran like the Undertaker would take an extreme bump like that makes it a special moment.

Afterwards, they teased that this would be the last time we see the Undertaker.

Winner: Edge

  Final Analysis Ratings

This was easily the best WWE pay per view in a very long time. Every single match on the show was a good match. There wasn't any "bathroom break" matches on this particular show.

I was really tempted to give this show a perfect 10/10 rating, but the injury to Randy Orton made it impossible for me to do. It's not his fault that he got injured, but it still did happen. We didn't get to see how that match would have finished.
