Wrestlemania 24 Results

Wrestlemania 24 has come and gone. Here are the results from the big event.

  Match Ratings
wwe kane ECW 24 Man Battle Royale

Expectations were low for this match, especially when you consider how many low level wrestlers were involved. There were only a handful of wrestlers in the match that the audience cared about.

Kane and Mark Henry are the final two participants, which makes sense. Kane gets the win (and the title shot) by kicking Mark Henry out of the ring.

Winner: Kane

wwe jbl Belfast Brawl
JBL vs Finlay

The best part about this match was that they didn't try to be something that they weren't. When you have two of the best brawlers in the business, you let them go out and just pound one another.

Good use of weapons and some hard hitting action made this match very enjoyable. It was a good way to start off Wrestlemania.

JBL getting the win was a bit weird, though. Most had assumed that Finlay and Hornswoggle would have gotten revenge to send the fans home happy.

Winner: JBL

cm punk Money in the Bank Match
CM Punk vs Chris Jericho vs MVP vs John Morrison vs Shelton Benjamin vs Carlito vs Mr Kennedy

As expected, the match had plenty of high spots, ladder use, and crazy dives.

The wrestlers need to be given credit for trying to come up with some new spots to try with the ladder. That's going to be hard to do every year that the match happens.

Shelton Benjamin takes a tremendous fall to the outside of the ring. It actually made Jeff Hardy's fall last year look mild.

Fans were pleasantly surprised to see CM Punk grabbing the briefcase at the end.

Winner: CM Punk

wwe batista Batista vs Umaga

This match was pretty solid, but there were a few things that kept it from being much better.

First of all, the match felt extremely rushed. Either WWE screwed up with time management for the event or Batista really had a hot date in Orlando.

The finish was a bit botched as well. Batista allowed Umaga's momentum to shift when he picked him up for the powerbomb. It forced Batista to fall back as well, but he brilliantly recovered enough to throw Umaga down. It looked cool, but everyone knew it was a botch.

Considering the importance of brand domination and the characters that were involved in the match, it's a bit surprising that it wasn't a lot more physical and bloody.

Winner: Batista

wwe kane ECW Heavyweight Championship Match
Kane vs Chavo Guerrero

Apparently, there was an ECW Heavyweight Championshp match at Wrestlemania 24. Only five people on this entire planet have claimed to have actually seen it, so it's hard for us to believe that it actually took place.

All joking aside, though, this match left everyone feeling pretty empty.

Fans weren't expecting a Wrestlemania classic or anything here, but they were at least expecting the match to go longer than 10 seconds.

Kane just basically came into the ring, hit a choke slam, and walked away with the ECW Heavyweight Championship.

Winner: Kane

1/10

ric flair Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels

Had this match just been a regular match on any other pay per view, the rating for it would have been a bit lower.

However, the emotional aspect of the match and the build up towards the event helped to make the match feel a bit more special. Knowing that this was Ric Flair's last pay per view match as an active wrestler made it incredible atmosphere as well.

Shawn Michaels did a good job of carrying the match, and Ric Flair did a good job of keeping up. However, we have to realize that Ric Flair is in no position to produce a five star match at this stage of his career.

Emotional ending that saw Shawn Michaels verbally apologize before finishing off Ric Flair. After the match, a teary eyed Ric Flair simply walked away.

WINNER: Shawn Michaels

wwe melina BunnyMania Match
Beth Phoenix & Melina Perez vs Ashley Massaro & Maria Kanellis

This was the portion of the show that was designed to attract and entertain casual wrestling fans.

Don't want to sound too mean here, but when the lights went off (due to technical difficulties), there weren't too many complaints heard.

Snoop Dogg helped to liven up the event. He even got involved at the end of the match by giving a clothesline to Santino Marella. Afterwards, he shares a kiss with Maria Kanellis.

We understand that Wrestlemania is as much about entertainment as it is about the wrestling itself, so we'll somewhat excuse it.

Winners: Melina Perez & Beth Phoenix

randy orton WWE Heavyweight Championship
Randy Orton vs John Cena vs Triple H

As expected, the match was very solid. Randy Orton and John Cena are both solid workers, and Triple H is one of the best ring generals in the business.

The ending was a major surprise to everyone as Randy Orton got the pin to keep the WWE Heavyweight Championship. Triple H had knocked out John Cena with the Pedigree, so Randy Orton gave Triple H the kick to the head to secure the win.

Management pulled a swerve here because they didn't want things to become too predictable.

Winner: Randy Orton

8/10
  Match Ratings
floyd mayweather Floyd Mayweather vs Big Show

This match really ended up being a lot better than most people had expected it to be.

A lot of credit has to go to the Big Show for controlling the pace of the match. Even more credit goes to Floyd Mayweather for portraying such a convincing heel (even if he wasn't supposed to) and for actually going out there and taking bumps.

Big Show took several chair shots (some of which were straight to the head) and a straight punch from Floyd Mayweather. The big fellow really wanted the match to be as realistic as possible. He's earned his paycheck.

The match rating also goes up a bit thanks in part to the bout being able to make all wrestling fans root against Floyd Mayweather. Though WWE didn't hype up that aspect of the match as much as they should have, it was obviously a "wrestling vs boxing" theme.

Winner: Floyd Mayweather

9/10

wwe undertaker World Heavyweight Championship
Edge vs Undertaker

The one thing that hurted this match right from the start was the fact that everyone should have been able to predict that the Undertaker was going to be winning the World Heavyweight Championship.

With a heel (Randy Orton) winning the first main event, it was obvious that the writers were going to send fans home by having a babyface (Undertaker) winning the final main event.

Nonetheless, it was a good performance from both guys. Lots of counters at the end there. Lots of near falls. Edge also did a tremendous job of making his character seem like he was putting up a fight to retain the belt. That's a highly underrated quality for a guy whose character is supposed to be a cowardly heel.

The finishing sequence, which was executed well, actually killed the momentum of the match a bit. It brought the ratings for the match down just a notch because that MMA style chokehold finisher that the Undertaker has been utilizing simply does not fit his character. A Tombstone Piledriver would have been the way to go.

Winner: Undertaker

  Final Analysis Ratings
Pretty good Wrestlemania, but it's nowhere near being considered the best ever. That's fine. You're not going to hit a home run every year.

It would also be better if they can cut down on the bad segments. The handful of bad segments really brought the overall rating of the show down.

The atmosphere was tremendous to look it because of the sheer size of the audience. However, the huge outdoor arena also made the pay per view seem dull. The audience just didn't seem excited enough about the show. That's a huge part of what makes a show great.

7/10
