When WWE brought Anthony Carelli up to the main roster, they wanted to give him another name to use. It had to be something Italian sounding. After coming up with Santino for his first name, they opted to go with Marella for his last name. That was a tribute to the late Gorilla Monsoon, whose real name was Robert Marella.
