When Vince McMahon purchased WWE from his father, he felt that Bob Backlund was not charismatic enough to be his heavyweight champion. He asked Backlund to turn heel and drop the belt to Hulk Hogan. However, Backlund refused, so McMahon decided to put the belt on the Iron Sheik temporarily before giving it to Hogan.
