High Cost of Advertising
We fully understand the "it takes money to make money" phrase. It's imperative for any business to spend money to advertise their product or services.
We also understand the value of having a well known figure being attached to a product.
There's a reason why we see Michael Jordan wearing underwear on TV, Tiger Woods driving around in a mini van, and even Hulk Hogan using deodorant.
It's the same reason why wrestling fans have seen Pete Rose, Pamela Anderson, Robocop (remember that?), Lawrence Taylor, Mike Tyson, Kevin Federline, Donald Trump and Pacman Jones in a wrestling ring.
That's right. We said Pacman Jones.
When word came out that WWE was using Floyd Mayweather to help advertise their product, a lot of wrestling fans pulled out their "I'm a hypocrite" t-shirt.
The very same people who bashed TNA for using an athlete for the sake of gaining exposure are now praising WWE for doing the exact same thing.
The reason why we see non wrestling people involved in wrestling is because it gives exposure to the business. It's basically just a form of advertisement. |
Money Mayweather
Like we said, we fully understand that it requires money in order to make money. However, we still don't support the idea of paying Floyd Mayweather that much money. $20 million is just way too much.
Is Floyd Mayweather going to generate more interest in Wrestlemania? Are there going to be a couple of extra people purchasing the pay per view out of curiousity? Will television ratings go up for Monday Night Raw?
The answer to all of these questions is more than likely yes. Floyd Mayweather is definitely going to bring more exposure for WWE. However, is the exposure going to be worth the $20 million paid to him? That's the big question.
The $20 million becomes even more disturbing when you consider that WWE could have gotten Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock to do a special match at Wrestlemania. Both wrestlers are doing comfortably without wrestling, but a $10 million paycheck would have been enough to get them to break out those wrestling boots.
This really wouldn't be an issue if WWE was paying Floyd Mayweather a much lesser amount. $5-8 million would have been more acceptable for wrestling fans.
Of course, there's also people who dispute the claim that WWE is paying the boxer that much money. They're claiming that the high amount was done just for publicity. If that proves to be true, then we'll change our tune. For now, though, we'll just continue to shake our heads at the price tag.
Closing Thoughts
Everyone is going to be keeping a close eye on the financial sheets to see if Floyd Mayweather earned his gigantic paycheck from WWE. |
