On Friday, Rey Mysterio had surgery to repair his injured bicep. He will now be out for much of 2008
To avoid confusion, let us remind you that Smackdown is taped on Tuesday nights and aired on Friday nights. We still get a lot of readers who are unaware of the fact that Smackdown is not live, so please spread the word.
The early word is that Rey Mysterio will be out for approximately 6 months. However, he could pull a John Cena and come back well before that.
A lot of fans have been calling this injury a "blessing in disguise" as Rey Mysterio had been losing momentum during his feud with Edge. Having him off television for a few months could help to rejuvenate his character.
The matches were good, and Edge's performance on the mic was wonderful. However, the feud was a bit lackluster because the audience never truly felt that Rey Mysterio had a shot at winning.
Well, his biggest fans thought he had a chance. However, with everyone else believing that Edge was going to be headlining Wrestlemania this year, the feud was just a formality. |
Replacing Rey Mysterio
Now that Rey Mysterio is out, we take a look at the main event scene on Smackdown. After browsing through the roster and factoring in the possibility that Rey Mysterio won't be out for the full six months, the Smackdown main event scene should do just fine.
The Big Show is officially on the Smackdown roster now (though he'll be on Raw for the next few weeks to promote his program with Floyd Mayweather). He's a fresh face that will add more depth to the Smackdown main event scene.
Matt Hardy is making his return soon. Once his feud with MVP ends (possibly at Wrestlemania or Backlash), he should be elevated enough to feud with Edge over the World Heavyweight Championship. That's a feud that needs to happen because management really needs to see if Matt Hardy can produce as a main event wrestler.
If WWE needs to stall, they could also have the feud between Edge and the Undertaker drag out for an extra month or two.
And then, there's the WWE Draft Lottery that is expected to happen some time after Wrestlemania.
A guy like Chris Jericho would be a perfect candidate to make the move to Smackdown. He's currently stuck in the Raw midcard scene. With Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Shawn Michaels, and John Cena ahead of him on the babyface side of things, there doesn't appear to be much upside to him staying on Raw.
Closing Thoughts
The most important thing right now is Rey Mysterio's health. He doesn't need to come back before he's ready because the roster is fine. |
