Pushing Petey
For the longest time, Petey Williams was known as "that X division wrestler that has the awesome finishing move".
That finishing move of his that everyone talks about is the Canadian Destroyer. It's a move that will make you do a double take even if you've seen it a dozen times.
Well, Petey Williams has a lot more than just a spectacular finishing move. He's always been an underrated in-ring performer who is solid and spectacular.
The biggest criticism on Petey Williams back then was that he didn't have enough of a character to get over with the audience. He was considered too generic. To borrow a phrase from Kevin Nash, he was a "vanilla midget".
Things have changed now. Petey Williams has a gimmick. He's playing the role of an egotistical weightlifter with an annoying accent. After you get used to the character, it starts becoming less and less annoying. It even borderlines on being entertaining after a while.
He's already thrown out some tremendous catchphrases as of late, one of which was "the definition of definition".

Steinerized
TNA has planted the seeds on what looks to be a future alliance between Scott Steiner and Petey Williams. After a segment between the two last week, Scott Steiner helped up Petey Williams and patted him on the back.
After thinking about the possibilities between the two, the idea starts to become more and more fascinating.
Petey Williams can become a "mini me" for Scott Steiner. He's already got the gimmick for it. Plus, the segments between those two can be downright hilarious if Petey Williams was playing the role of sidekick.
Scott Steiner has a lot of momentum right now. He has in his possession a shot at the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. He also has an intriguing new manager in Rhaka Khan (also known as Trenesha Briggers). Putting Petey Williams with him right now would allow the former member of Team Canada to gain some momentum himself.
The trio would become an entertaining midcard act for TNA.
If they really wanted to expand on things a bit, the writers can also throw Kip James (formerly known as Billy Gunn) into the group. His character and physique matches that of both Scott Steiner and Petey Williams. It also looks like his tag team with BG James (formerly known as Road Dogg) is about to come to an end. He's going to need something to do.
Closing Thoughts
It's nice to see Petey Williams finally getting a chance to shine. |
