Finlay the Fighter
If you could go back in time about a decade and tell people that Finlay would be in the spot that he is today, you'd get a room filled with people who thought you were crazy.
Let's take a look at the spot that Finlay is in today.
First of all, he's employed by WWE as a wrestler. Not many people would have guessed that. Not many people would have guessed that he would be heading into Wrestlemania with a high profile feud against Vince McMahon either.
Ten years ago, Finlay was wrestling for WCW as a midcard wrestler. He went by several names, including the Belfast Bruiser and Fit Finlay.
Finlay never went above the WCW World Television Championship. However, he did have some really good matches against Booker T and Chris Benoit. Of course, not a lot of fans gave him credit for those matches because it was done in WCW.
WWE fans back then ridiculed Finlay for being "an old guy in WCW". Most people didn't think that he would ever been seen again after WCW folded.
Well, he's got the last laugh because that "old guy" is now one of the top stars in WWE. |
Wrestlemania Spotlight
Wrestlemania is by no means written in stone right now, but all reports indicate that Finlay will be standing on the other side of the ring against Vince McMahon. It'll either be a singles match, a tag team match, or Finlay will be Hornswoggle's second as he face his "father".
It's incredible that Finlay would be involved in a program with Vince McMahon. Even though he's not a regular in-ring performer Vince McMahon is still a high profile matchup. Being in a match against him at Wrestlemania will get you recognized. Usually, that spot is reserved for the likes of Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Triple H, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Finlay is by no means as popular as those guys were, but his relationship with Hornswoggle has boosted his popularity to the point where he can be in the match.
Not only that, but he also has a chance to be victorious in the match. Vince McMahon doesn't benefit at all from getting a victory here. Plus, WWE also likes sending the fans at Wrestlemania home happy by letting the good guys get the upper hand. Regardless of the match type, Hornswoggle and Finlay will be dancing and celebrating in the ring in Orlando, Florida.
Finlay should also be fine after Wrestlemania as well. His push should continue as the chances of Hornswoggle staying employed has increased tremendously in the last few months. With Hornswoggle around, Finlay should still be able to maintain his spot in the middle of the ladder.
Finlay won't be winning the WWE Heavyweight Championship or World Heavyweight Championship, but he is in line for a run with either the WWE United States Heavyweight Championship or WWE Intercontinental Championship.
