A Wild Knight
Bobby Knight is one of the greatest basketball minds of our era. Of course, a lot of people don't recognize that because they simply can't look past his wild antics over the years.
A day after he surprisingly resigned from his head coaching position at Texas Tech University, TNA has extended an offer for Bobby Knight to become the company's first head coach.
From a wrestling point of view, no one outside of the company has any idea what that means. It's pretty vague. That could either be a position as a manager or as an authority figure backstage. It could also mean that he could just be brought in for a couple of skits as a motivator.
From a business perspective, this move makes sense if you view it as a publicity stunt. That's the most likely reason why TNA is doing this.
Just like Frank Wycheck, Tito Ortiz, and Pacman Jones before him, Bobby Knight wasn't hired because of his wrestling abilities or knowledge. He was hired because of the marketing potential. Sadly, a lot of wrestling fans are unable to understand this concept.
Bobby Knight is all over the news this week because of his resignation. TNA is just jumping on an opportunity to get themselves some more publicity. |
Potential Storylines
If TNA were to somehow get Bobby Knight to sign a deal, then there's plenty of potential storylines they can do with him. He's a controversial figure, so TNA should capitalize on that.
The first and most obvious choice would be for Bobby Knight to coach Kurt Angle. The former Olympic Gold Medalist wrestled in college where he won the NCAA Division I championship twice. That sounds like a pretty good fit for the two. Plus, Kurt Angle is a recognizable face. If Bobby Knight can draw in some new viewers, then they'll be able to recognize Kurt Angle from his WWE days.
Kevin Nash was a former college basketball player (University of Tennessee). That bit of information was actually listed in TNA's press release. Putting Bobby Knight with Kevin Nash could lead to some classic backstage segments. Kevin Nash is still one of the funniest guys in the business. Bobby Knight could play the straight man to Kevin Nash's comedic routine in much the same way Bob Backlund used to. Plus, Kevin Nash is also still recognizable to the casual wrestling fans.
In keeping with the recognizable wrestlers, Team 3D (formerly known as the Dudley Boys in ECW and WWE) would be another good option. The current storyline could require them to lose some weight soon. Bobby Knight could be brought in for segments with them where he's trying to help Brother Ray (Bubba Ray Dudley) lose the weight. Brother Ray is an excellent talker, so those segments could be pure comedy.
Closing Thoughts
If this deal helps to bring more interest into TNA, then it'll end up being a great idea. It's just up to management now to see if they can actually pull it of. |
