ECW's "New" New Era
Yet another new era is about to begin in ECW.
Tonight, four men will battle to see who will be in the ECW World Heavyweight Championship match at Vengeance. CM Punk, Chris Benoit, Marcus Cor Von, and Elijah Burke will all have a chance to not only become the ECW World Heavyweight Champion, but also the centerpoint in the "new" new ECW.
With the departures of Rob Van Dam, Sabu, and the Sandman from the brand, ECW is becoming less and less like the original renegade brand.
In CM Punk, the WWE has a very capable worker who is beloved by the internet wrestling community. More than anything, Punk represents the new breed in ECW. He's been groomed for this spot ever since he teamed up with DX and the Hardys at the Survivor Series.
In Marcus Cor Von, the WWE has a guy that they can hot shot to the title. He's the least likely of the four to win the championship, which would make it even more of an event if he did win it. Fans have been waiting to see the same skills that made him a star in TNA.
In Chris Benoit, the WWE has an internet favorite. He's a veteran who can carry the younger guys to great matches. It was evident on Smackdown as he carried MVP to stardom. Being an ECW Original, Benoit would be a great choice as champion.
In Elijah Burke, the WWE has a main event heel in the making. Burke has tremendous mic skills that is capable of drawing a lot of heat from the crowd. His cocky demeanor would get fans to pay to see him getting beat. Also, putting the title on Burke would allow the WWE to make full use of the New Breed gimmick/stable.
Regardless of what happens on Tuesday and Sunday, ECW is going to have a brand new world heavyweight champion. A champion who has never held the championship before. |
