The Saga Continues
The Vince McMahon death storyline is easily the most talked about storyline in wrestling since the original nWo in 1996.
Management is quite pleased with the media coverage that they've received over the storyline. Despite the years of wrestling being called "fake" by the media, the WWE still has managed to trick a few media outlet into believing that this is real. There are still plenty of fans out there that believe that this is real.
The WWE is wisely playing up to the confusion to further enhance the storyline. On the official WWE website, the storyline continues. Earlier in the week, the WWE threw up an image of the WWE flag being flown at half staff in memory of McMahon. Today, there are stories on the website where agents are checking out McMahon's office seeking clues.
On ECW, they even did a ten bell salute (something that was quite offensive to the internet wrestling community). A similar thing will happen on Smackdown this Friday night.
The WWE is not leaving any stone unturned with this storyline. They even changed up the name of the Edge/Batista Vengeance Match. The original name of the match was a "Do or Die" match. It has been changed to a "Last Chance" match to be more sensitive to McMahon's "death".
While the Mr. McMahon character may have died, Vince McMahon still exists. In fact, he was backstage at Smackdown doing his usual things. The staff took extra steps in making sure that the fans didn't see McMahon.
This type of secrecy is quite reminiscence of the old days of wrestling where wrestlers would do everything possible to keep things secret. Back then, wrestlers who were feuding weren't even allowed to be seen together in public.
Despite the moral aspect of this storyline being disgusting, the marketing aspect of this storyline has been tremendous. |
