Power Struggle In ECW
Changes are going to happen in ECW. Or are they?
When ECW was first brought back by the WWE, the original plan was to make the show more youth oriented than the Raw and Smackdown brands. Somewhere along the way, that plan was scrapped, and you have the current product that you see now on TV.
Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes has been pushing to go back to the original plan for ECW. However, he's being met with some resistance from Vince McMahon and ECW head writer David Lagana.
With the departure of Sabu, the upcoming departure of Rob Van Damn, and the possible departure of the Sandman (Tommy Dreamer seems to be safe because he's a reliable worker that does other roles backstage), a big change is going to happen regardless.
Though there's plenty of talented new wrestlers on the brand, the heart and soul of the new ECW has been the ECW Originals. While they can still have a version of the ECW Originals (Stevie Richards and Balls Mahoney come to mind), it won't be the same.
The idea of having an ECW Originals stable with Mic Foley, Chris Benoit, Stevie Richards, Balls Mahoney, and Tommy Dreamer, though, would help keep the spirit alive.
Regardless of which direction the brand decides to go with, it would be nice to have some sort of connection with the original ECW. It would also be nice if the show would focus more on CM Punk, Elijah Burke, and Marcus Cor Von.
It'll be interesting to see how the brand unfolds after the upcoming One Night Stand pay per view. |
