Christian Cage Signs Multi-Year Deal
TNA has announced that former world champion Christian Cage has signed a multi-year contract extension with TNA.
This is a tremendous bit of news for TNA because in Cage, they have a main event heel who is still recognizable to the majority of wrestling fans. Along with Kurt Angle, Cage provides TNA with credibility, especially with new fans who are only familiar with the WWE brand of wrestling.
When Cage quit the WWE in 2005, it sent a bit of a shockwave throughout the wrestling community because most people viewed the WWE as the place to be. While the WWE is still the main goal for most wrestlers who get into wrestling, it was no longer the case for Cage.
In the WWE, Cage felt that he had reached the glass ceiling. He didn't feel that he would be elevated any higher than he was. Cage felt that the WWE didn't have enough faith in him as a main eventer when they added Chris Jericho to his main event program with John Cena. So, when his contracted ended, he made the decision to go where he felt his character would be allowed to develop.
That place was TNA, which has now become a viable alternative work place for wrestlers. Silently, wrestlers in the WWE have always hoped that TNA would succeed. Having a second company to work for allows them a little bit more leverage in contract negotiations with the WWE.
A lot of uninformed fans fail to realize that if TNA improves, then the WWE product improves as well. Vince McMahon is a tremendous businessman when motivated. Ever since WCW died several years back, he hasn't had an ounce of competition, so his motivation and creativity has died off as well.
If TNA succeeds, we all benefit. Signing Cage to a long term deal is a step towards success. |
