After doing backyard wrestling for a bit as youth in West Virginia, Heath Slater decided to get serious about his ambitions to become a professional wrestler. He signed up with Curtis Hughes to start training. Hughes is a former WCW star, who was known as The Big Cat and Mr Hughes. He was also once the on screen bodyguard for Lex Luger and Harley Race.
