On Tuesday, WWE taped an episode of Smackdown in Portland. Among the more notable faces backstage was none other than Chael Sonnen. The former UFC star was there to meet up with Michael Cole for some reason. Many are under the impression that he could be negotiating a deal to join World Wrestling Entertainment as an on screen character.

In a rather interesting development, Chael Sonnen, who is currently the lead commentator for GFW, is set to meet with Michael Cole when WWE does a Smackdown taping in Portland on August 11. There are talks that Sonnen has long been interested in joining the promotion and working as an on screen talent. He definitely has the passion and the talent for the job.

To further sell the kayfabe injury suffered by Michael Cole at the hands of Brock Lesnar during Monday Night Raw, WWE has decided to keep the announcer off of the commentating table for the next episode of Smackdown. The on air explanation is that he needs surgery. Tom Phillips is replacing him and will join Jerry Lawler and Byron Saxton at the booth. No confirmation yet, but the belief is that Cole will be back for Monday Night Raw.

There are a good amount of people that want to see Michael Cole removed from the Smackdown commentating team. The fear is that he will be a bit overexposed since fans already listen to him for three hours on Monday Night Raw and the monthly pay per view events. A new voice might make the secondary show a bit more distinct for the viewers. WWE, however, does not want to remove Cole because he is the commentator they trust most.

Even though the change was made this month, there are already rumblings that we could be seeing another change in the form of the Smackdown announcers. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler are safe in their positions, but there are rumors that WWE isn't completely sold on Byron Saxton just yet. Fortunately for him, there are people backstage who love his personality, so he will have some in his corner when push comes to shove.
