Everyone in a way, shape, or form has seen a scary movie. They are a common occurrence in most lives. In the month of October, you can expect to see more than a couple scary movies on the television and in the theaters.

My favorite "horror" film of all time is The Descent. It combines two common elements of the horror genre that don't often usually go together in most scary movies. Atmospheric tension and suspense with violence and gore. Usually when you see a movie, it's one or the other. Films like the Saw series, Rob Zombie's movies, a lot of the classic horror remakes rely on one or two primary things: gore/blood, and scare tactics. And what I mean by scare tactics is using sudden surprising "jump' moments to generate a reaction. That's not scary. That's startling. Those are two very different reactions.

And then there's films like the recent Paranormal Activity (which myself and fellow movie-buff The Shocker both give high regards for), the first Alien, and the terrific Japanese horror film Noroi which are about creating an atmosphere and a mood by using lighting, story, character interaction, and pacing to build suspense. These movies don't need that excessive violence or what I like to informally call a "boo" moment.

With The Descent, however, you get both, and it works very well. The entire first half is spent creating a very dark, claustrophobic, terrifying mood. And once the real action starts to kick in, it becomes a survival-horror with some terrific fight sequences and EFFECTIVE use of gore. I say effective because it works within the context of the movie. It's not bloody or violent just for the sake of being bloody and violent.

Long story short, The Descent is my favorite horror movie. I'm actually a huge horror fan and I have a list compiled of some of my favorite horror movies ever, or just ones that I found very interesting and would watch again. It's constantly growing every time I see a new one, or remember an older one. Not all of them fit the "horror" genre at first glance, but they are all at least in one way classified as a "thriller:"

Horror really is just an umbrella term. Depends on what some people find scary. It's specifically classified as a "psychological thriller," which is just an off-shoot of psychological horror.

Young Frankenstein has to be my favorite monster movie of all time.

Halloween (original) is my favorite horror movie because it contains suspense and has the testicular fortitude to use the escaped lunatic route aswell as the fact that it contains NO BLOOD.
