Tatanka once received a shot at the NFL. In 1987, the players all went on strike, and teams needed bodies on the field. Tatanka, whose real name is Chris Chavis, was given tryouts by the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Raiders. The Miami Dolphins offered him a contract, but he had to turn them down because the amount was less than what he was making at Bally's Fitness.
