Move over, Jim Ross. Matt Striker has taken over as the best commentator in WWE.
Matt Striker Takes Over
On Raw last night, Sheamus earned a bunch of new fans when he attacked Jerry Lawler. The incident enabled Matt Striker to take over as the color commentator for Raw for the rest of the episode.
Since Raw is still the most watched WWE television show, that means that a lot more fans were finally introduced to Matt Striker and his brilliant commentary style. Those of us that watch ECW on a weekly basis have already been made aware of just how good he is on the mic.
Jerry Lawler will forever have a place in wrestling history. However, it's past time for him to leave the Raw commentating booth and allow someone else to take his place. Someone with a fresh approach to the game.
When Matt Striker took over for Jerry Lawler last night, the show became just that much more entertaining. He brings something new to the table.
Matt Striker has taken over as the best commentator in all of WWE.
What Makes Him the Best?
In order to be a successful commentator, something about you and your style has to stand out from the rest of the pack.
When Joey Styles was introduced to the world as the commentator for ECW, his excitement in the product helped to get the fans hyped up for it as well. His emotional style was quite contagious.
While a lot of fans disregard Mike Tenay since he's worked for WCW and TNA, his style shouldn't be overlooked. His knowledge of the moves that are being applied has been quite a pleasure to listen to.
Gordon Solie, who is easily the best commentator of all time, had a style that made you forget that wrestling was not real. He called the matches as if it was the Super Bowl or a big fight between Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier. He made it feel that real.
Matt Striker, who was born and raised in New York, takes a little bit from each of those commentators and turns it into a style of his own. It's a style that has turned him from being a marginal wrestler on the ECW brand to being the best commentator in WWE (and perhaps the industry).
Much like JBL and Tazz before him, Matt Striker is able to lend some credibility to the mic since he does know what it feels like to be in the ring. When he explains how painful a particular move is, you tend to want to believe him more.
The 35 year old also has quite an underrated wit. He's as quick as they come, and he's not shy about unleashing his humor during a match.
All of these things combined makes him the best right now.
Without the Shackles
The belief is that Matt Striker wasn't restricted on the mic as the commentators on Raw and Smackdown are.
As many people are well aware, the commentators constantly have Vince McMahon in their ears. Both Mick Foley and Tazz have publicly complained about having someone yelling in their ears as tey try to do their jobs. In fact, it played a huge part in both leaving for TNA.
If Matt Striker is allowed to do what he did in ECW, then that would be the best thing possible for the company.
Closing Thoughts
I always knew that he had mic skills back when he was wrestling. Never knew that it would translate this well to the commentating booth, though. |
