Desmond Wolfe is looking to prove people wrong about his ability to become a star. Fortunately for him, TNA is the company that looking to prove that they can create new stars.
Hungry Like the Wolfe
For approximately 6 years, Desmond Wolfe worked in Ring of Honor as Nigel McGuinness.
He's grown used to hearing independent wrestling fans talking about how great of a performer that he is. Some even say that he's among the best in-ring performers in the world.
Unfortunately, though, he was working for ROH, a company who was able to put on tremendous show but has not been able to take their company to the next level in the eyes of the internet wrestling community.
To become a big star, Desmond Wolfe, whose real name is Steven Haworth, knew that he had to take his game to another playground.
Desmond Wolfe, along with another talented ROH performer Bryan Danielson, decided that he was going to give it a shot in WWE. His relationship with William Regal gave him an inside chance at signing on with the company.
Bryan Danielson managed to get into the WWE doors. Desmond Wolfe, though, wasn't nearly as fortunate. He was informed by the company that his services would not be needed because of his physical conditioning.
Much like the wolves out in the wild, TNA sensed an opportunity. They knew that they could an extremely gifted in-ring worker to their roster because he wouldn't be willing to go back to ROH.
That's how the marriage between TNA and Desmond Wolfe began.
Sending a Message
Earlier this month, we all saw a video of TNA president Dixie Carter addressing all of the wrestlers in the company. She basically informed everyone that she has a vision for TNA to go to the next level and everyone needs to just have faith in it.
That message was obvious.
The messages that weren't so obvious, though, were the ones she sent when the company signed Desmond Wolfe to a contract and decided to give him a big push.
Her first message is to all of the professional wrestlers out there that are looking for an alternative place to work. She's basically telling people TNA is the place where you can actually get a big push.
Think about the message that has been sent to Bryan Danielson. He recently signed a WWE developmental deal. However, what are the odds that he's going to be placed into an immediate big time program with the likes of Triple H or Shawn Michaels.
TNA is basically telling the world that Desmond Wolfe is going to be a star. You don't just put anyone into a program with Kurt Angle. You do that with a guy that you believe is going to be a major star some day.
The second message that was sent was to the fans.
Over the last year or so, the internet wrestling community has grown louder and louder about WWE's inability to create new main event wrestlers. There's a lot of guys with potential (looking at you, Miz), but the main event scene right now is still littered with recycled feuds.
By immediately elevating Desmond Wolfe into a premiere spot in the company, Dixie Carter is letting the fans know that she's heard the concerns and that she's going to do something about it.
Closing Thoughts
Whatever the reasons behind it, I'm just glad that TNA is pushing Desmond Wolfe. The guy is extremely talented, and it would be great for the world to be able to see just what he can do. |
