Dennis Miller on WWE

Award winning commentator Dennis Miller will be commentating on men in tights again. However, the difference this time is that it is going to be in WWE and not NFL.

Dennis Miller on WWE

Over the last few days, WWE released an official statement that Dennis Miller would be hosting an upcoming episode of Monday Night Raw.

The famed commentator will be hosting the special 3 hour episode of Raw on December 14, 2009. WWE has scheduled the Slammy Awards show for that night, with Dennis Miller being the host of that ceremony as well.

After tackling Monday Night Football and Saturday Night Live, Dennis Miller is now going to give it a try at Monday Night Raw.

Overhead

Dennis Miller has a way with words.

If he didn't, he wouldn't have become as prominent as he is today. He would not have been given high profile spots on Saturday Night Live and Monday Night Football. He would not have been given his own television and radio shows.

In short, he has quite a bit of wit.

For wrestling fans, he might have a little too much wit, though.

While Dennis Miller was a commentator for Monday Night Football, he managed to become a topic around water coolers on a weekly basis. Every Tuesday morning, football fans from around the country would dissect his various comments and jokes.

The criticism on Dennis Miller during that stint was that he did not pay close enough attention to his target audience. Sports fans would much rather not have to do research in order to understand jokes with several obscure references.

Dennis Miller is going to be throwing out a bunch of jokes when he hosts Raw that is going to leave puzzled looks on the faces of those in the audience. The WWE demographics is much younger than those that the NFL sees.

Potential Success

The special appearance by Dennis Miller is going to be a successful one for WWE. The 56 year old Pennsylvania native will guarantee that the national media is going to provide much wanted coverage for WWE.

WWE basically assured themselves of the extra media coverage by using someone like Dennis Miller on a night where they're doing an awards show. That format enables the host to come up with some one liners that the media would love to replay.

That's from a business standpoint.

From a wrestling standpoint, though, it might not necessarily be a success. From what is known, Dennis Miller is not an avid wrestling fan like former guest host Shaquille O'Neal was. He might not be entirely familiar with the product that he's promoting.

Of course, when it comes to the concept of the celebrity guest hosts, WWE is thinking more along the lines of business than they do about what the wrestling fans want.

Closing Thoughts

As a fan of Dennis Miller's humor, I'm looking forward to it. However, I just don't think the majority of wrestling fans are going to understand or appreciate his style of comedy.
