The hottest rumor right now in WWE is that John Cena will be the man chosen to face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 26.
Cena vs Undertaker
On Raw this week, we saw the Undertaker and John Cena team up in a triple threat tag team match against Chris Jericho & Big Show and Shawn Michaels & Triple H.
To borrow a term from Raw commentator Michael Cole, it was "vintage" WWE booking. The company has been known for years to use various components of pay per view matches in tag team matches on television shows prior to the big event.
At the Survivor Series, John Cena will be defending the WWE Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels and Triple H, the two men who comprise of Degeneration X. Undertaker will be defending against the two Unified Tag Team Champions in Chris Jericho and Big Show.
After the match, we saw the Undertaker assaulting John Cena with a Tombstone Piledriver.
For many, that was just a quick attack that fit into the personality of the Undertaker character, who has generally stood as a loner outside of his affiliation with his brother Kane.
However, others saw that as a sign of things to come.
Rumored Opponent
For years, wrestlers dreamed of being in the main event of Wrestlemania. It was a spot that meant that you were at the top of the business. To close out Wrestlemania meant that the top wrestling company in America had faith in you to be the top star.
However, after a decade and a half of dominance from the Undertaker, another spot at Wrestlemania has proven to be just as valuable. Wrestlers were now dreaming of being the one chosen to go up against the Phenom at the event where he has yet to lose.
Every single year, wrestling fans would debate on which wrestler would be the perfect opponent for the Undertaker. Some want a young up-and-coming star to be in the match so that they can get the rub. Others want a proven veteran who can have a great match with the Undertaker.
Shawn Michaels received the honors this year, and he went out there and had one of the best matches of his career.
Ever since that match, there have been plenty of rumors as to who would get the privilege of being in that match.
For a point in time there, some wanted Ted DiBiase to be the one to face the Undertaker. Many believed that he was going to be on the fast track towards the main event. A match against the Undertaker on the biggest stage of them of all would help to lend his young career plenty of credibility.
As of late, there have also been rumors that Vince McMahon himself would step into the ring against the 7 time former world champion. Little segments on Smackdown lent some credibility to the rumors, but nothing else has surfaced since then.
The latest rumor has John Cena as the person to step into the ring with the Undertaker on March 28, 2010 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
With John Cena still hated by a large portion of the fans, it would make the match that much more interesting. Those that hate him would watch intensely to make sure that he would not be the one to break the Undertaker's winning streak at Wrestlemania.
It would be an interesting choice if WWE decided to go that route.
Closing Thoughts
I never really thought about John Cena as the choice to face the Undertaker next year. However, choosing him would build up some suspense amongst the fans that are worried that the company would finally have the Undertaker staring at the lights at Wrestlemania. |
