Well, it looks like WWE is skyrocketing Sheamus into the main event spot. It's a spot he should have been headed towards, but this is just a bit too fast.
Cena vs Sheamus
On Raw this week, we all saw celebrity guest host Jesse "the Body" Ventura book a battle royale match where the winner becomes the new top contender for John Cena and the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
At first, it appeared as if this was just a vehicle for the writers to allow Randy Orton back into the main event title scene, but WWE managed to pull off a shocker.
Raw newcomer Sheamus ended up winning the match.
To further the storyline between the two, WWE set up a contract signing segment. While Jesse Ventura had John Cena distracted, he was attacked from behind by the Irish superstar.
Sheamus was made to look extremely strong in the segment. The 6'6", 270 pound giant ended up throwing John Cena through a table. He stood tall at the end of the show.
Too Soon
Thanks to his backstage connection and his unique look, it was only inevitable that Sheamus was going to get a strong push on the Raw brand. Not too many people are opposed to him moving up the ladder.
However, the speed at which he's doing so, though, has caused some fans to have second thoughts. Some have even gone as far as to resent the push that Sheamus is getting because is simply is much too soon.
Thus far, Sheamus has only been involved in programs with Goldust, Shelton Benjamin, Jamie Noble, Jerry Lawler, and a handful of local jobbers. None of these programs have done much to give him credibility as a main event player.
Instead, WWE decides to shoot him into a title program with John Cena right away.
This is one of those situations where WWE should have emulated TNA's approach. Newcomer Desmond Wolfe was thrown immediately into a high profile feud with Kurt Angle, who is not the champion at the time. WWE should have done the same thing by having Sheamus go up against a top level babyface other than John Cena.
That would have given fans the opportunity to slowly grow on Sheamus.
Protecting the Push
Unless WWE wants to swerve the wrestling world, don't expect to see Sheamus winning the WWE Heavyweight Championship at the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs pay per view.
He shouldn't be winning the title just yet.
It's no secret that WWE has booked John Cena to be the ultra powerful force. However, this would not be a good situation for him to be booked that way. The match has to be competitive or else Sheamus will lose even more credibility. His push could easily be screwed with the wrong match booking.
Sheamus can't win, but he also can't lose decisively.
A good thing for WWE to do would be to have Sheamus hanging in there with John Cena, who then gets the win by a narrow margin (i.e. a small mistake from Sheamus during the tables match).
Doing that would keep him strong and allow him to develop in the midcard as a wrestler that will some day be a threat to John Cena once again.
Closing Thoughts
I like that WWE is thinking outside of the box on this one. However, they have to be very careful to not ruin Sheamus with a push that's going 20 miles over the speed limit. |
