Some fans criticized Trish Stratus when she refused to participate at Wrestlemania 25, but Torrie Wilson has recently shed some light into that decision.
Trish Stratus Rejects WWE
A couple of weeks before Wrestlemania 25, the buzz was growing among the internet wrestling community because word had spread that there was going to be a battle royale featuring several popular divas from the past.
Fans started to salivate at the possibility of seeing their favorite divas of all time like Lita and Trish Stratus.
Instead, what they got was Joy Giovanni, Molly Holly (who was a phenomenal worker), and Jackie Gayda. Not to say that these ladies aren't good at what they do. It's just that fans were hoping for more from the match itself.
Trish Stratus never gave an official reason as to why she rejected WWE's offer for her to work the match, so fans began to speculate amongst themselves. Some soured on Trish Stratus and blasted her for "being too good" for professional wrestling.
For those wrestling fans who were mature enough to not pass judgment on her until more of the truth came out, Torrie Wilson recently revealed something in an interview that sheds more light on the situation.
Torrie Wilson's Interview
Torrie Wilson recently conducted an interview with the Baltimore Sun's very own Kevin Eck, who is as insightful of a mind as there is in the world of online professional wrestling journalism (a term that is loosely used for 80% of the people that are in it).
In the interview, she states that she was very upset with herself for agreeing to be a part of the battle royale at Wrestlemania 25. She stated that she was quite embarassed by it.
For those of you that have already forgotten (or have conveniently chose to forget), the battle royale was promoted to feature the former divas. However, the match itself was basically just a tool for the writers to come up with a joke for Santino Marella to dress up as a woman.
The match itself was quite rushed. It was entirely sloppy. The women that were involved in the match weren't highlighted whatsoever. You could have taken random female wrestlers from the independent wrestling circuit, and the fans would not have noticed.
Torrie Wilson stated that she felt that the match was closure for her. Wrestlemania 25 was her last involvement with WWE.
Trish's Excuse
In the interview, Torrie Wilson also explained that the reason why Trish Stratus refused to work the match at Wrestlemania 25 was because she knew beforehand how things were going to be handled.
There really wasn't any point in her making an appearance if it wasn't going to be noticed. She would have been just one of the many faces that were basically a blur.
Trish Stratus might have been more likely to agree to a match had it been a singles match against a diva that was close to being in the main event.
It's not that hard to picture her coming back for a match against someone like Beth Phoenix. That would have been a fresh matchup for her. Plus, Beth Phoenix has enough credibility to work a match against Trish Stratus.
Closing Thoughts
Looking back, it's impossible to blame Trish Stratus or Lita for not showing up for that match. It would have been meaningless for them to have been there just so they can be a part of the punchline. |
