The main event for Night of Champions is obvious. The final match might be easy to predict, but the filler matches are going to be a bit more difficult.
Night of Champions Stream
When most people think of the term "stream", they instantaneously assume that it is referring to the ability to watch wrestling pay per views through the internet.
However, the term is also used to describe how the matches are placed on the show. The position of the matches determine the stream of the show.
If I were in charge of Night of Champions, this is how I would stream it.
- Rey Mysterio vs Dolph Ziggler
- Maryse vs Mickie James
- Christian vs Tommy Dreamer
- Melina vs Michelle McCool
- Kofi Kingston vs Big Show vs Miz vs MVP vs Carlito vs Jack Swagger
- Chris Jericho & ??? vs Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase
- CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy
- Triple H vs John Cena vs Randy Orton
That stream right there gives Night of Champion a nice balance and flow.
Opening Match
Anytime you try to decide on an opening match, you have to keep in mind that the audience is going to be pretty amped up from being in the building. You can't deflate them with a subpar match.
For years now, Rey Mysterio has really been a consistent opening match performer. His style of wrestling is exciting enough to keep the audience on their feet. It really does set the tone for the entire evening.
Considering that Dolph Ziggler is his opponent, it makes even more sense.
The company wants to put some spotlight on Dolph Ziggler. Giving him a title upset victory over a popular wrestler like Rey Mysterio to open up Night of Champions would do a lot for his momentum and credibility.
Main Event
There's been a lot of time where it's been difficult to predict which match is going to end the show and send the fans home.
That's not the case with this year's Night of Champions pay per view.
Everyone knows that the triple threat match featuring John Cena, Randy Orton, and Triple H for the WWE Heavyweight Championship is the main event match.
As talented as CM Punk is and as popular as Jeff Hardy is, their match simply does not have the big match feel that the Raw main event has.
Show Stealer
The match that could steal the show at Night of Champions is the one for the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship.
We don't even know who Chris Jericho's mystery partner is going to be. We also know that Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase aren't going to amaze the audience with their in-ring performance (they're solid but unspectacular).
However, that just tells you how incredible Chris Jericho has been as a performer nowadays. He can elevate just about anyone, whether it's on pay per view, a house show, or one of the weekly television shows.
It also doesn't hurt that much of the audience has been talking about the mystery partner storyline for the last few weeks. That does a lot to build up the anticipation of the match.
Closing Thoughts
On paper, this doesn't seem to be anything special. However, when you factor in Chris Jericho's mystery partner and the fact that this could be Jeff Hardy's final pay per view appearance, it becomes a show that you should really make the effort to see. |
