Edge Turning Babyface

By now, everyone knows that Edge has suffered a serious injury and will be out of action until next year. However, what everyone doesn't know is that management was about to make him a babyface again.

Edge Turning Babyface

Edge has been a heel since 2004. Do the math, and you'll easily realize that it's been an eternity (in wrestling years, that is) since he's been a babyface.

What's even more amazing than the longevity of his run as a heel is that Edge has managed to keep it going without really growing stale. The company has managed to keep him fresh with the following storylines.

  • Money in the Bank winner.
  • Affair with Lita.
  • Feud with Matt Hardy.
  • Stealing the belt from John Cena by cashing in the Money in the Bank.
  • A hardcore feud with Mick Foley.
  • Teaming up with Mick Foley.
  • Forming Rated RKO with Randy Orton.
  • Forming an alliance with Vickie Guerrero and La Familia.

As incredible as the streak has been, there's always going to come the point where creative is going to run out of ideas. In order to freshen Edge up again, they would eventually have to turn him back into a babyface.

Just days after Edge suffered a devastating Achilles Heel injury, it has been revealed that there were plans being formulated to turn him into a hero again.

We were this close to seeing Edge as a babyface again.

Possible Scenarios

Considering how good Edge is at being a heel, it was going to take quite a force for the writers to be able to get fans to root for him again. His character is so defined now that the fans instantly boo him on command.

In terms of being the top heel in the company, Edge has the slight lead ahead of Randy Orton in the race.

So, just how do you get the audience to support Edge again?

Quite simple. You pair him up with someone that is almost as despised by the audience as Edge. You pair him up with Chris Jericho. Let the two run wild for a few months, followed by a split.

That would have been the best way to have turned Edge into a babyface. We may never know how WWE was going to do it, but it's quite likely that they would have gone this route.

The Alpha Male

If you're having a hard time being able to imagine Edge as a top level babyface, then you simply don't understand just how talented and passionate Adam Copeland is about the business.

In this business, only a handful of people actually manage to "get it". Some wrestlers get to the point where they truly understand what it takes to become successful regardless of the role that they're placed into.

Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, and the Undertaker are examples of guys in the company that "get it". Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Jeff Jarrett, Kevin Nash, Sting, and Booker T are examples from TNA of guys that "get it".

Edge is someone that has an incredible understanding of the business. He knows how to connect with the audience. He knows what it takes to join John Cena as the company's top babyface.

Kevin Nash once stated that to be the main event guy, you have to be someone that guys want to be and someone that women want to be with.

Edge knows how to be that.

Closing Thoughts

Hopefully, the plan doesn't get dropped in the next 6 months. It would really be awesome to see Edge as a babyface. It would provide him with a new challenge. Unfortunately, though, 6 months is an enternity for Vince McMahon. He'll change his mind about a billion times before then.
