In a shocking move, Edge and Chris Jericho teamed up at the Bash to win the Unified Tag Team Championship.
Edge and Jericho Win Tag Titles
When the Bash pay per view started, Chris Jericho was advertised to defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Rey Mysterio. Edge wasn't even advertised for a match despite being one of the biggest stars in the company.
By the end of the pay per view, though, both men are in possession of two championship belts each.
WWE decided to pull a swerve and add a third team to the tag team title match at the Bash. They pulled an even bigger swerve when it was revealed that Edge & Chris Jericho would be teaming together.
The two managed to pick up the win against Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase and Carlito & Primo Colon.
Edge & Chris Jericho are now your Unified Tag Team Champions.
Brilliant Move
This is a brilliant move on so many levels.
For one, it makes the Unified Tag Team Championship meaningful again. Carlito & Primo Colon did absolutely nothing to elevate the championship because management didn't put any of the spotlight on them.
Edge & Chris Jericho are guys that can't avoid the spotlight because they're just so talented. Having the belts in their possession means that it will receive the spotlight as well.
Secondly, this allows Edge & Chris Jericho to have something to do while they're out of the World Heavyweight Championship scene. It doesn't hurt to have main event wrestlers stepping away from the title picture for a bit.
With these guys in this role, they can be used to elevate the midcard wrestlers on the roster.
If WWE was interested in actually pushing Cryme Tyme, then they can be thrown in a tag team title feud with Edge & Chris Jericho. Imagine how hilarious Edge & Chris Jericho can be in this situation.
Plus, with the duo being the tag team champions, that means that they can now be used on all three brands. An appearance in ECW to taunt real life friend Christian could provide a mark out moment for fans who have been waiting for that to happen.
Top Heels
With WWE going with the decision to make CM Punk a full blown heel, the company knew that they needed to have another big heel attraction to go along with the Straight Edge Superstar.
It doesn't get much bigger than the combination of Chris Jericho & Edge. You're talking about two of the most entertaining heels in the business.
If CM Punk's title programs aren't really pulling in the audience, then WWE can always lean on Chris Jericho & Edge to come through on their end.
Nothing against CM Punk. He's an extremely talented performer (quite underrated, in fact). However, he simply doesn't have the drawing power of Edge & Chris Jericho does yet.
In order for WWE to be able to take a risk on a world champion that isn't quite there yet (in terms of drawing power), they're going to need a strong secondary act to go along with it.
Closing Thoughts
This idea has already worked for WWE. I'm already excited at the prospect of seeing how entertaining Edge & Chris Jericho can be together. |
