At the Extreme Rules pay per view, Tommy Dreamer is going to get a shot at the ECW Heavyweight Championship. More importantly, he's getting a shot at saying farewell to the fans.
Tommy Dreamer Gets A Shot
Earlier in the year, WWE started a storyline for Tommy Dreamer where he stated that he would walk away from the company if he wasn't able to capture the ECW Heavyweight Championship by the time his contract ended.
It was a promising storyline that would have seen Tommy Dreamer being involved in the title scene for the first time in a very long time.
The storyline then disappeared.
Many people were under the assumption that the storyline was simply dropped from the book. That might have actually been the case, but management decided to bring it back for Extreme Rules.
After weeks of seeing Christian and Jack Swagger feuding, ECW fans are now being given a slight bit of relief from repetition thanks to the addition of Tommy Dreamer.
That's right. It's going to be a triple threat hardcore match at Extreme Rules.
The End of the Road
It's a victory for Tommy Dreamer to just be able to work a title match on a pay per view again.
The last time that Tommy Dreamer had a pay per view title match was approximately a year ago at the 2008 Great American Bash (Colin Delaney turned on him while he was challenging Mark Henry for the title).
There haven't been too many of those opportunities in the 8 years that Tommy Dreamer has been with WWE. Those 8 years are coming close to an end.
WWE is running a storyline where Tommy Dreamer agreed to extend his contract by a day so that he can challenge for the ECW Heavyweight Championship.
Unless plans change, you can expect Tommy Dreamer to lose the match. He will then be given a moment to say goodbye to the audience (hopefully, a huge "ECW!" chant erupts).
This Sunday should be the end of the road for Tommy Dreamer in WWE.
What's Next?
It may be the end of the road for Tommy Dreamer in WWE, but it might not necessarily be the end of the road for his wrestling career.
Tommy Dreamer still has options in professional wrestling.
Despite not being on the same level as some of the top guys in ROH, Tommy Dreamer would still be welcomed in ROH. The ROH fans have been known to be rough to wrestlers who they feel aren't up to their expectations, but Tommy Dreamer is a respected guy in the business.
Plus, they could easily run a storyline where Tommy Dreamer states that he wants to be a part of an upcoming promotion again.
Tommy Dreamer recently addressed rumors of a potential stint in TNA. He did state that it was still a possibility and that he did have plenty of friends in the company.
With the recent signing of Stevie Richards, Raven, and Shane Douglas, the company could be on the verge of having an ECW reunion.
Then again, Tommy Dreamer could just choose to remain with WWE as a trainer or backstage agent.
Closing Thoughts
I'm glad that Tommy Dreamer is getting this opportunity. I'd be willing to bet that he's going to try to put on the performance of his career in this hardcore match. |
