A Regal Win

by Josh Connolly
November 11, 2008

This week on Raw, William Regal made a U-Turn in his career as he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

This coming from the same man who was suspended only a few months ago.

A New Champion

It's common knowledge that William Regal was suspended six months ago due to a violation of the WWE Wellness Program.

Before his suspension, though, he was in the midst of a big push.

After winning the 2008 King of the Ring tournament, he was universally hated as the evil General Manager of Raw. He was arguably the biggest heel in the company.

When he returned, most were expecting WWE to make an example of William Regal and knock him down the card.

This first happened as he engaged in a program with Jamie Noble. The feud was good, but as it was at a lower level, it only emphasized the belief that he was going nowhere.

However, this week, we have seen him hold gold for the first time since his 2004 World Tag Team Championship reign (with Eugene).

Expectations

If you take away the unexpectedness of the reign, then I am still let extremely satisfied.

Many are going to miss the entertainment of Santino Marella, but they forget that William Regal is a great wrestler.

He is extremely good at working his gimmick of being an arrogant Englishman.

This gives him a lot of room to work, especially with people on Raw such as Jamie Noble, Santino Marella, and Rey Mysterio.

A feud with Rey Mysterio would be fresh and add some much needed credibility back to the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

It might not be a show stealer, but it would be a lot more successful than Rey Mysterio's feud with Kane.

Returning Role

Another idea would be to put William Regal back in the position in which he gained so much attention.

The general manager spot is now open, which means that there is a possibility that he may return to the role that he made his mark in earlier in th eyear.

We could see William Regal hold the title and the role at the same time, thus giving him the power of title defenses and creating further heat towards his character.

Closing Thoughts

It was a great move to give William Regal the title. Now, it's time for WWE to get creative with it.
