Still Got It

Despite what people say about wrestlers getting old, there's still guys out there that still got it.
DX Reunion
On Monday Night Raw this week, we saw another DX reunion featuring Shawn Michaels and Triple H.
Now, those of us that have been watching wrestling religiously for the past couple of years know that a DX reunion is nothing new.
In fact, Shawn Michaels and Triple H spent much of 2006 together.
Nonetheless, the two "old" guys (Shawn Michaels is 43 and Triple H is 39) still got it.
The fans still adore these two guys regardless of how long their characters have been around.
That "IT" Factor
Some of the older wrestlers in the business have that IT factor that most of the younger wrestlers will never have.
Shawn Michaels and Triple H are guaranteed to receive a reaction whenever they do a DX reunion.
Ric Flair is able to get a reaction whenever he makes an appearance, whether it be on WWE or at an autograph signing.
Mick Foley received a tremendous reaction when he shows up in front of a TNA audience.
To a lesser extent, Hacksaw Jim Duggan is able to generate a decent reaction when he shows up at a wrestling event.
These older wrestlers have more of a connection with the audience than a lot of these younger wrestlers ever will.
Capitalize On It
There's a lot of fans who would prefer to see the older wrestlers stepping aside in favor of giving time to the younger wrestlers.
However, from a business perspective, promoters are always going to do whatever generates them the most money.
Pretend that you were a promoter for an independent wrestling federation.
Would you rather spend $200 to bring in 2 young athletic wrestler who can go full speed for 30 minutes?
Or would you rather spend $5,000 to bring in Ric Flair for a 10 minute speech?
Your decision would be based upon who you think the audience will pay to see.
WWE may have a lot of younger wrestlers that deserve the shine. However, they also need to make money.
If that means doing a DX reunion once in a while, then by all means, do it.
Closing Thoughts
Let's not be so quick to discard the older wrestlers in the business. They're still worth a lot more than you think. |
