William Regal Suspended

by Jack Windham
May 20, 2008

William Regal has been suspended by WWE for 60 days after failing to comply with the wellness program.

William Regal Suspended

Early Tuesday morning, WWE.com revealed that William Regal (they call him by his real name of Darren Matthews) had been suspended.

The suspension will last 60 days since this is his second time violating the wellness program.

On Monday Night Raw last night, WWE ran a storyline where William Regal was "fired" and removed from his position as the general manager of the brand.

William Regal has had problems in the past.

He once was so drunk on an international flight that he urinated on a stewardess. He was also one of the many WWE wrestlers that was found to have been given illegal steroids by a federal drug probe.

Not Fired

Before I go further, I'd like to clarify once again that William Regal has not been fired in real life.

His character was fired in the storyline.

With WWE, you don't automatically get fired until your 3rd offense.

On Top

When WWE ran the storyline last night where William Regal was removed from his position of authority, it was a bit puzzling.

Many wrestling fans had wondered why WWE would kill off a storyline that was arguably one of their best ones in years.

Thanks to his character abusing his powers as the GM, William Regal was generating more heel heat than he had in his entire career.

The heel heat was so strong that the fans actually started supporting John Cena again.

Well, with the announcement of the 60 day suspension, we now know why the storyline was cut off while it was hot.

Regal's Return

It's a bit hard to predict whether or not WWE will be pushing William Regal when he returns.

Jeff Hardy recently made his return from a 60 day drug suspension, and WWE had absolutely no problems pushing him.

Granted, Jeff Hardy is a lot more popular than William Regal. However, William Regal as a hated heel does make him pretty valuable.

Plus, he does have Triple H on his side. It was Triple H that convinced management to push William Regal as a singles heel.

Closing Thoughts

I'm beyond disappointed with William Regal. These guys need to learn to control themselves, especially when they're being given a huge push.
