IGN Lists the Greatest IC Champions
by Jack Windham
May 5, 2008
IGN magazine has recently listed the ten wrestlers who they felt were the greatest WWE Intercontinental Champions of all time.
The IGN List
IGN considers the following 10 wrestlers to be the best IC champions of all time. The list is in order.
- Randy Savage
- Honky Tonk Man
- Ultimate Warrior
- Chris Jericho
- Razor Ramon
- Pedro Morales
- Shawn Michaels
- Curt Hennig
- Jeff Jarrett
- Rick Rude
That's not a bad list at all.
Honorable Mentions
IGN didn't provide a list of honorable mentions, so I'll go ahead and help them out by providing a few names that could have been on the list.
If Honky Tonky Man is so valued because of the length of his reign, then guys like Don Muraco and Greg Valentine need to be mentioned as well.
Chris Jericho has won the WWE Intercontinental Championship a record 8 times, so he belongs on the list.
Rob Van Dam might not have won the title 8 times, but you can't simply blow off the 6 times that he did win the belt. He deserves honorable mentions.
Bret Hart had two title reigns that lasted less than a year combined. However, he did have some pretty high quality matches during that time.
Chyna held the belt for approximately two months. Since she's the only woman to have ever worn the title, that deserves some mentions as well.
IC Title Today
When you browse over the list of former WWE Intercontinental Champions, you'll see several memorable names and moments.
There was a time when this championship really meant something. At times, the feud over the IC title was a lot more entertaining than the feud over the WWE title.
That's not the case today where the entire focus is on the WWE title.
Chris Jericho is currently the champion, but one can't help but recognize that he was only given the belt because Jeff Hardy was suspended for drugs.
He hasn't actually had a feud over the IC title since winning it a few weeks ago.
In fact, with Chris Jericho involved in a program with Batista and Shawn Michaels, he doesn't even need the championship belt right now.
They should put it on someone that needs it. Someone that can elevate the belt and be elevated by the belt.
Closing Thoughts
Pretty good list by IGN. However, like every list ever created, there's always room for debate. |
