William Regal Wins King of the Ring

by Jack Windham
April 22, 2008

King William Regal doesn't have a nice ring to it just yet, but if WWE plays it right, then it certainly will.

Kingdom Come

Not too many people saw it coming, but William Regal ended last night sitting on the throne with a brand new title to add to his General Manager title.

William Regal is now the brand new King of the Ring.

If you didn't see that coming, don't feel bad. There's millions of other wrestling fans that didn't see it coming either.

When WWE announced that they were doing a King of the Ring tournament, many fans had expected to see a young midcard wrestler being given a push.

Names like Mr Kennedy, MVP, and CM Punk were brought up as potential winners of the tournament.

However, in the end, it was the 42 year old William Regal who was sitting on the throne.

Active Again

A lot of wrestling fans are a bit confused as to why the general manager of Monday Night Raw would be given a push.

However, keep in mind that William Regal can still wrestle. He's not in his current role because he can't wrestle. WWE just decided to try him out in that spot.

With this win, William Regal is basically about to become an active wrestler again.

Proper Push

Generally, the guy that wins the King of the Ring receives a singles push that could possibly take him all the way to the top spot in the company.

Right now, it's pretty difficult to imagine the company being built around William Regal.

The guy is as talented as anyone on the mic and in the ring, but he just doesn't have that "it" factor that WWE looks for.

However, that doesn't mean that William Regal can't get a push. Keep in mind that he was promised a singles push as a heel when he was drafted over from Smackdown.

He might not be able to hold the WWE Heavyweight Championship, but William Regal can still have entertaining feuds against John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H.

WWE could also choose to utilize William Regal's character and veteran leadership to help bring up the younger wrestlers (DH Smith, Drew McIntyre, etc) in a stable.

Then again, WWE could possibly have had William Regal winning the event to swerve the fans. He could even lose the crown to a babyface wrestler in the upcoming weeks.

Closing Thoughts

At the very least, we're going to see some solid wrestling from William Regal again. It was a waste having him in a suit every week.
