After constant pushing, Jim Ross has finally convinced WWE to induct legendary commentator Gordon Solie into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Greatness
The majority of wrestling fans today have no clue as to how great Gordon Solie was a commentator.
If all you know about him is that tremendous video that WWE did and from Jim Ross mentioning his name on occasions, then you're barely seeing the tip of the iceberg.
A lot of wrestling fans like to call Jim Ross the best commentator ever. Jim Ross himself, though, would agree with us that Gordon Solie was the best ever.
The following is the 3 best commentators ever in the history of professional wrestling.
- Gordon Solie
- Jim Ross (pre-WWE)
- Jim Ross (WWE)
It's Real
The thing that made Gordon Solie so great was that his announcing style made it seem like wrestling was real.
Gordon Solie was able to help you forget reality for a few minutes at a time. In between the bells, you're in a fantasy world with Gordon Solie's voice as your tour guide.
If Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair were in the ring battling over the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, you're going to think they're both really fighting for that belt.
When Gordon Solie would cover championship matches, you would get the same vibe from it as you would a championship boxing match featuring Mohammed Ali.
Suspending belief is what makes wrestling such a great source of entertainment for us. Gordon Solie was able to assist us with that as well as anyone ever could.
Prior to joining WWE, Jim Ross utilized that style as well. Just like Gordon Solie, he made wrestling feel as if it's a legitimate sport.
It's understandable that Jim Ross would change his style to suit WWE's vision, but one can't help but wonder if he could have surpassed his mentor.
Bit of Irony
There is a bit of irony with Gordon Solie being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Gordon Solie was vehemently against the induction of Randy Savage's father, Angelo Savage, into the WCW Hall of Fame.
He was against the induction because he didn't like how people were using politics to get induction done. Gordon Solie also didn't like how Angelo Poffo was being inducted despite not having much of an impact in WCW.
At Wrestlemania 24, Gordon Solie will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame despite not having a direct impact on the company either.
Closing Thoughts
It's about time WWE honored one of the best this business has ever seen. |
