CM Punk Wins the Money in the Bank Match

by Jack Windham
March 30, 2008

After winning the Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania 24, CM Punk is now the next "chosen one" to get a main event push.

Opportunity Knocks

When opportunity knocks, you always answer the door.

A few weeks ago, Jeff Hardy was the favorite to win this year's Money in the Bank and go on to get another title shot.

Then, a failed drug test forced WWE to suspend him for two months.

WWE then had to choose another wrestler to win the match. That somebody ended up being CM Punk.

Jeff Hardy's loss has now become CM Punk's gain.

Extreme Changes

It looks like ECW is in for some major changes in the upcoming months.

We already have ourselves a brand new ECW Heavyweight Champion in Kane.

With there being very little chance of CM Punk using the briefcase to challenge for the ECW Heavyweight Championship, we're also going to be seeing him leave the brand.

WWE is going to have to be very creative (the WWE Draft Lottery will help) if they want to replace the guy that has been the centerpiece of the brand for the last year or so.

As popular as Kane is, he's not a guy that they're going to be able to build an entire brand around. More than likely, he'll be a transition champion.

Then again, ECW could be on its last leg. After their current television contract runs out (in about a year or so), WWE may choose to just shut down the brand.

Punk Rocks

From now until Wrestlemania 25, CM Punk will be challenging for either the World Heavyweight Championship or the WWE Heavyweight Championship.

That's quite a leap for a guy that was once deemed too small and too "bush league" to find success in WWE.

Since he's spent his WWE career in ECW, management knows that he's going to need a nice push before he can actually challenge for the belt.

All eyes will be on CM Punk when the WWE Draft Lottery rolls around. He's a sure bet to be switching brands in the next few weeks.

With Randy Orton keeping the WWE Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 24, that could be a set up for an eventual match against CM Punk.

WWE could also choose to hold off on the title shot until they place the World Heavyweight Championship back around the waist of Edge.

Closing Thoughts

It was a tremendous sight to see CM Punk climbing up that ladder. Now, we'll get to see him climb up THE ladder.
