While he has not been given a feud to work with since making his return to WWE, Rey Mysterio is very much still a part of the plans for Wrestlemania 30. He was penciled in for a big match against Sin Cara, but management is now looking for a new opponent for him at the pay per view.
Aside from half hearted programs with Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio really has not been given a full program by WWE to work with since wrestling John Cena at Survivor Series 2013. However, the feeling backstage is that Del Rio is assured a spot at Wrestlemania 30 to draw in the Spanish media.
Since he is claiming that he owns the copyright to the name, Luis Alvirde is still utilizing the Sin Cara name. The masked performer used the moniker while working shows in Mexico and Puerto Rico recently. The belief is that WWE be pursuing legal actions against him.
There are speculations that Antonio Cesaro and John Cena coudl be working a feud together in the near future, as the two stars were spotted working out together at the WWE Performance Center. Cesaro received a slight push from management this week by being added to the main event at Elimination Chamber 2014.
"I still think the Superkick is the best finisher ever. It was just so good. There's so many [favorites]. I think Antonio Cesaro's finish right now is cool. I always loved the Piledriver, so an adaptation of the Piledriver is very awesome to me. I've always loved submission holds, so I love the Sharpshooter, that sort of thing. I love Dean Malenko's Cloverleaf. The things that I never really liked as finishers were the stuff that was wacky, stuff like the Von Erichs, who did the Tornado Punch, you know what I mean? The Ultimate Warrior, even though he was my favorite as a kid, had the Press Slam, and then he'd hit the ropes a couple of times and give 'em the Big Splash, the Hulk Hogan Legdrop, stuff like that was all stuff where I was just like, 'Eh.' To be fair, I honestly always hated the Rock Bottom. To me, it was just like, 'Uh, that's weird and stupid.'"
- Daniel Bryan discussing finishing moves and how he hates the one used by Rock
In another sign that the business relationship between Sin Cara and WWE is over, the masked performer has been signed by World Wrestling League, a promotion in Puerto Rico. He's still interested in returning to USA and working with WWE again, but the feeling is not mutual.
Sin Cara has been contacting WWE about a contract extension, and it appears that the company has not been responding to him whatsoever. Officials are not interested in moving forward with the performer, and they plan to eventually phase the character out completely.
While management has given up on the character, WWE will be keeping Sin Cara around because he is featured in the upcoming Scooby Doo movie. Oficials have no plan on bringing the original performer back, so Hunico will have the role until after the movie has been released.
"'I can't believe that Mistico didn't make it in WWE.' Said nobody that knew the real deal.."
- Karl Anderson taking a jab at the release of Sin Cara
Batista won Royal Rumble 2014 by eliminating Roman Reigns in the end. Other contestants during the match were Alberto Del Rio, Alexander Rusev, Antonio Cesaro, Big E Langston, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler, El Torito, Erick Rowan, Fandango, Goldust, Great Khali, Jack Swagger, JBL, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, Kane, Kevin Nash, Kofi Kingston, Luke Harper, R Truth, Rey Mysterio, Ryback, Seth Rollins, Sheamus and the Miz.
One of the backstage issues between Sin Cara and WWE was that the masked superstar refused to learn English. He openly states that he does not like the language, so he never bothered to learn it. Sin Cara also feels that communicaiton isn't a must in the ring.
The original Sin Cara has pulicly stated that he owns the rights to the character. He also claims that he has proof, and that lawyers would be able to sort things out with WWE. Some believe that is the reason why the company has not been pushing the character as much lately.
Sin Cara is going to be making his return to the wrestling ring soon, but it will not be for WWE. The masked star is set to work a show on February 1, 2014 down in Mexico, which is a further sign that a contract extension with WWE is not in the works.
While the initial plans had him working a match against Sin Cara, WWE may have changed their mind on how to use Rey Mysterio at Wrestlemania 30. There are those within the company that are now leaning towards him working a match against Alberto Del Rio with his mask on the line.
It looks like Antonio Cesaro might be in the doghouse with WWE, as the former ROH star was recently booked in a surprising loss during a singles match against Fernando, a performer that is rarely featured on Monday Night Raw or Smackdown.
While the masked superstar is still interested in a return, WWE has expressed very little interest in bringing Sin Cara back now that his contract has expired. The belief is that the company can save a good amount of money by using Hunico instead.
With his contract expired, Sin Cara is officially gone from WWE. The masked star acknowledges that Hunico has been working under the mask since his departure, and he has been encouraging fans to let the company know that he is missed.
"It certainly was disappointing. When we signed with this company, we both knew what we were getting into. We both made each other a promise that we would work as hard as possible, whether it's as a team or singles competitors. I know he'll wind up on his feet, and he probably already is, and he'll continue wrestling all over the world."
